FIFA World Cup™ Boston 26 (Boston 26) is the host city organizing committee leading the strategic planning and execution of the seven matches of the FIFA World Cup 26™ awarded to Boston, including the official celebratory events taking place over a 39-day period surrounding the tournament. ABOUT THE ROLE: The Director of Communications for FIFA World Cup ™ Boston 2026 will serve as the strategic architect and operational lead of all communications efforts surrounding Boston’s role as a Host City. This high-impact role demands a dynamic, highly collaborative professional with a proven ability to connect strategic objectives to powerful storytelling across diverse stakeholder groups.
Working cross-functionally and with a strong bias for action, the Director will act as a strategic connector across local, and national constituencies . The successful candidate will bring deep experience in media relations, crisis communications, editorial strategy, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring Boston’s efforts align seamlessly with broader FIFA and Boston 26 goals.
Location: Onsite in Foxborough, MA with frequent local travel and occasional regional travel.
Type/Term: Full-Time, exempt, 40hrs/wk. through early Fall 2026 when position would end.
Reports to: Chief Marketing & Communications Officer
Salary Range: $150,000 - $170,000
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Develop and execute a comprehensive communications plan that aligns with FIFA and Boston 26 objectives and evolves with program needs across the tournament lifecycle.
- Collaborate with internal departments, FIFA counterparts, host cities, community partners, and external agencies to ensure communications strategies are integrated, effective, and measurable.
- Lead the development and execution of a multi-channel editorial strategy and calendar, telling the story of Boston 26 across earned media, owned platforms, social media, internal communications, and third-party partnerships.
- Oversee the creation of impactful materials including press releases, Q&A documents, key messaging frameworks, leadership briefs, reactive statements, speeches, and more.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists across sports, business, entertainment, travel/tourism, and general news, proactively managing media outreach and reactive engagement.
- Foster relationships with key partners including FIFA, Meet Boston, other host cities, community leaders, and sponsors to enhance storytelling reach and alignment.
- Design and implement proactive crisis and reputation management plans, partnering closely with FIFA and stakeholders to ensure preparedness and coordinated response. Maintain a crisis playbook and lead ongoing readiness initiatives.
- Identify and cultivate relationships with relevant thought leaders, government figures, dignitaries, athletes, celebrities, and influencers to amplify communications and drive audience engagement.
- Promote alignment, enthusiasm, and transparency across the Boston 26 team, ensuring consistent internal messaging and a unified team spirit on the road to 2026.
- Direct agency partners and communications vendors to ensure deliverables meet quality, timeline, and budget expectations.
- Monitor, measure, and report on communication effectiveness, media outcomes, and crisis response performance, using insights to drive continuous improvement.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR: - Bachelor's degree in Communications , Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.
- 7–10 years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, or media relations, preferably in sports, entertainment, tourism, or large-scale events.
- Proven success in leading complex communications strategies and stakeholder engagement programs.
- Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with experience creating materials across diverse formats and platforms.
- Exceptional interpersonal and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence and collaborate across organizations and cultures.
- Strong crisis management acumen with experience developing and implementing crisis communication plans.
- Experience working with senior leadership, government stakeholders, and high-profile individuals or organizations.
- Adept at managing multiple agency partners and vendors in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment.
- Deep understanding of media landscape, including traditional and digital channels.
- Comfort in operating both strategically and tactically. Flexible in nature, and able to adapt to a complex, matrixed, and varied environment.
Please Note : Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States without visa or sponsorship, and must be within reasonable commuting distance of Foxborough, MA.
WORK EXPECTATIONS: - Full-time, onsite, 40hr per week role that may require occasional evening and weekend work. Local and regional travel is expected on occasion. Work hours will fluctuate and include activity outside normal business hours during tournament time (June-July 2026).
- This role is estimated to conclude in late Summer of 2026 following the tournament.
