Job Title: Operator
Reports To: Foremen and Team Lead and their delegates
Supervises: None
FLSA Status: Not Exempt
Summary: Operators are knowledgeable and experienced working with and performing
routine maintenance on various types of heavy equipment. They also perform
Laborer functions on the job site as schedule, scope, and progress require or as
directed by their superiors.
Operator II employees have mastery of all conventional heavy equipment,
including excavators, loaders, bulldozers, rollers/compactors and site trucks. They
can perform assigned tasks with little to no supervision—often in concert with
other Operators and Laborers—and have experience operating equipment to
perform all of the trade and craft services SumCo offers.
Essential Duties: (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all that may be found in positions of this class.)
• Operate heavy equipment to safely and efficiently complete assigned tasks.
• Set up equipment to minimize excessive handling & maximize productivity.
• Identify obstacles to productivity and work with Foreman to resolve.
• Operate in a manner to minimize wear & tear and extend equipment longevity.
• Perform daily equipment inspections prior to beginning work.
• Perform routine scheduled maintenance of equipment.
• Communicate any equipment issues to superintendent / Management for repairs / corrective action.
• Participate in and take on the responsibilities of the Laborer role as work flow and project schedule require.

Experience: • 10+ years of industry experience, including 6+ as a practicing Operator
(primarily in an excavator) and 4+ as a Laborer.
• Understand limitations and safe operating procedures for various equipment.
• Adaptable to and willing to take on multiple equipment types and job tasks.
• Comfortable working with equipment around utilities and structures and in a wide range of site and ground conditions.
• Works well with others in a dynamic crew setting.
• Knowledgeable about & retain instructions on best practices for assigned tasks.
• Understand defined task sequences & requirements for efficient completion.

Employees in this role work on job sites, often in open, natural settings. They may
be exposed to all manner of weather conditions, including rain, snow, sun,
extreme heat and cold etc. Project scopes often include work in and around
water, sometimes requiring employees in this role to enter the water with
appropriate safety attire and equipment.
